Having awake hand surgery isn't stressful
During the summer of 2023 we asked our patients to help us work out if they found the experience of awake hand surgery stressful or anxiety provoking. We asked our patients undergoing awake surgery to use a 'faces' anxiety assessment rating, using the scale below:

Have a look at these faces and choose the one that shows how much anxiety you felt during the procedure.
Over a number of operating lists, 27 consecutive people gave us their feedback. Universally people found the experience to produce, no anxiety.
We are happy that the vast majority of our patients don't find awake surgery anxiety provoking.
The 'Faces Anxiety Scale' is a validated screening measure of preoperative anxiety.
